Mutual Fund Utility (MFU) is the mutual fund industry’s own transaction platform — a non-profit service created by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) and jointly operated by participating Asset Management Companies. Unlike Groww, Zerodha Coin, or Angel One — which are SEBI-registered intermediaries earning revenue through equity trading, demat accounts, or platform services — MFU is a pure utility created specifically for mutual fund transactions with zero profit motive. It is the most direct route to investing in mutual funds available to Indian retail investors, completely bypassing brokers and distributors to place transactions directly through the industry’s own infrastructure.

How MFU Works
MFU operates at mfuindia.com and as a mobile app. Investors register once on MFU to create a CAN (Common Account Number) — a single account number that serves as the investor’s identity across all AMC transactions placed through MFU. Think of the CAN as the MFU equivalent of a demat account — it links to your PAN, bank account, and Aadhaar KYC records, and acts as the single reference number for all your mutual fund transactions across all AMCs on the MFU platform.
Once the CAN is created and KYC is verified, an investor can purchase, redeem, switch, and place SIPs across all participating AMCs from a single login — without opening a separate account with each AMC, without a demat account, and without a broker. All investments are in direct plans by default, with the full direct plan expense ratio advantage.
CAN — The Central Account Number
The CAN is MFU’s most important feature. Before MFU, investors who wanted to invest in funds from multiple AMCs needed to complete separate KYC and account opening with each AMC. With a CAN, a single registration and KYC on MFU covers all 30+ participating AMCs simultaneously. The CAN also consolidates your portfolio view across all AMCs in one place — similar to what MFCentral provides but within the transaction platform itself.
One CAN can cover multiple types of accounts: individual, joint, HUF (Hindu Undivided Family), and other investor categories. Each account type gets a separate CAN under the same investor profile.
How to Register and Use MFU
Registration: Visit mfuindia.com, click “Register CAN,” and complete the online form with PAN, personal details, bank account information, and Aadhaar KYC. The CAN is created and emailed to the registered address within 1 to 3 business days.
Placing a Transaction: Log in to MFU with your CAN number and password. Select the transaction type — purchase, redemption, switch, SIP, or STP (Systematic Transfer Plan). Select the AMC and scheme. Enter the amount or units. Submit. The transaction is processed directly through the AMC’s systems.
Bank Mandate for SIP: SIP instructions on MFU require a bank mandate — the same NACH-based authorisation as on broker platforms. First SIP takes 20 to 30 days to activate the mandate; subsequent instalments execute automatically.
Portfolio View: MFU’s portfolio section shows all holdings across all AMCs registered under the CAN, with current NAV, invested value, and return information.
Who Should Use MFU
MFU is most appropriate for: sophisticated investors who want the most direct route to mutual fund transactions without any broker intermediary; investors who already use multiple AMC websites and want to consolidate transactions under one platform; investors who specifically want to avoid all broker platforms due to privacy or preference concerns; and institutional or professional investors executing large-value transactions where direct AMC access is preferred.
For most retail investors, particularly beginners, the user interface of MFU is more utilitarian and less polished than consumer apps like Groww or Angel One. The consumer apps’ superior UX, instant customer support, and mobile-first design make them more practical for everyday retail SIP investing, even though MFU is technically the most direct transaction route.
MFU vs Other Platforms
MFU serves the same technical function as Groww, Zerodha Coin, and Paytm Money for direct plan mutual fund investing — but with different strengths. MFU has no profit motive; the other platforms cross-subsidise their mutual fund service through equity brokerage, AMC fees, or platform subscriptions. MFU’s CAN provides the most comprehensive multi-AMC portfolio view among non-broker platforms. MFU’s interface is less consumer-friendly than the polished apps. MFU requires no AMC and no platform fee of any kind.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. What is a CAN in MFU?
Common Account Number — a single identifier created on MFU registration that links to your PAN and bank account, allowing transactions across all participating AMCs without separate account opening with each.
Q2. Is MFU safe for mutual fund investments?
Yes — MFU is an AMFI-authorised platform operated by the mutual fund industry itself. Transactions are processed directly through AMC systems and fund units are registered in your name at the AMC.
Q3. Are direct plans available on MFU?
Yes — MFU processes direct plan transactions by default. Regular plan transactions are also possible on MFU but serve distributors who use the platform for client transactions.
Q4. Can I manage all my mutual fund investments from MFU regardless of which AMC they are with?
Yes — provided all your folios are linked to your CAN. Investments made through other platforms before CAN creation can be linked by submitting existing folio details to MFU.
Q5. How does MFU compare to MFCentral?
MFU is a transaction platform — you can buy, sell, and switch funds. MFCentral (operated by CAMS and KFintech) is primarily a portfolio view and statement platform. For comprehensive mutual fund management, using both is ideal: MFCentral for portfolio overview and MFU for transactions.
